Peruvian police said Shining Path guerrillas planted bombs throughout the capital, exploding them just before midnight on May 23, 1992. Twenty people were reported injured in the explosions.

“Keep your mouth open to avoid injuries to internal organs,” one popular magazine instructed readers in a list of car-bomb survival tips. “Jump in a hole, like an empty swimming pool.” In the last two weeks, the Maoist guerrillas have placed 30 car bombs in and around this city, successfully exploding half of them. A taxi that stops in front of a bank is now inevitably greeted by a chorus of shrill whistles from nervous guards. Offices are frequently emptied by alerts that send workers stampeding down sidewalks.

“Let’s play ‘bomba,”’ 4-year-old Cantu Lentz proposed to a recent visitor to her apartment. Without coaching, she threw herself under the dining room table, opened her mouth and counted to 10.10
